What You Can Expect as a Volunteer

As a Sawubona volunteer, you will have the opportunity to contribute your time and skills to a mission that brings conservation and community feeding together.

Depending on operational needs and your experience, your volunteer placement may include:

  • A programme orientation explaining Sawubona’s mission, your responsibilities and relevant safety procedures.

  • Supervised field participation alongside licensed Professional Hunters and the Sawubona team, where appropriate and authorised.

  • Assistance with conservation harvesting or wildlife management operations, subject to permissions, safety requirements and programme needs.

  • Practical support with field operations, which may include transport, handling, processing preparation or cold-chain logistics.

  • Insight into the journey from field to feeding programme, including how suitable venison is processed and distributed to support local communities.

  • The opportunity to serve a meaningful cause, helping Sawubona provide nutritious protein to children and families in need.

Your role and schedule will be discussed with you before your placement. Specific activities, locations and harvesting opportunities will depend on operational requirements and cannot be guaranteed.

Please note: Airfares, board and lodging, insurance, personal expenses and any tours or safaris after your volunteer placement are paid for separately.

Donations do not purchase a hunting experience, guarantee field participation or reserve a volunteer placement. Volunteer applications are assessed separately.

Expenses Paid Separately
The suggested donations exclude:

  • International and domestic airfares.
  • Board and lodging throughout the stay.
  • Travel insurance, visas and personal expenses.
  • Separately quoted transport or other services.
  • Personal tours, safaris and holiday activities.

Before confirming travel, volunteers will receive a written outline of their approved placement, responsibilities and any separately payable costs.

Your Personal Travel After Volunteering
After completing your volunteer placement, you are welcome to continue exploring South Africa at your own expense.

Any additional accommodation, sightseeing, safaris, recreational hunting or other holiday activities fall outside the Sawubona volunteer programme and must be booked and paid for separately. Charitable donations do not cover these activities.

Donation and Tax Information

The tax treatment of any contribution depends on the receiving organisation, any benefits provided, applicable law and the donor’s circumstances. Sawubona does not guarantee that donations or volunteer travel expenses are tax-deductible.

Any goods or services provided in connection with a payment will be identified and valued where required. Please obtain independent tax advice before claiming a deduction.
